I am normally not one to write about anything political. As much as I enjoy sharing my own opinion and expressing myself, somehow I feel like I come up short in dealing with anything on the political side. Maybe I feel a little too uninformed or just not politically savvy enough, I don’t know what it is.
Regardless of those feelings, I shouldn’t let it stop me from joining the conversation. And today’s conversation is obviously going to be centered around the hottest debate of the moment – national health care in America. The bill has passed and we’re not likely going backwards.
The question I pose is this: was it a mistake?
I’m looking for some insightful, thoughtful answers. Large, sweeping statements that aren’t backed up won’t do. If you think the passing of this bill is the end for the United States of America don’t say it and run, tell me why and how exactly this country is over. If you think this bill is the best thing since Apple Pie, tell me why and how. If you’re going to say that Obama is the Antrichrist, don’t.
Are you down on this bill because other countries with nationalized healthcare have taxes that take away up to 50% of workers’ wages just to fund it? Give me some examples. Are you against it because you don’t want the government in your business?
Are you for this bill because you know someone who has needlessly suffered because they couldn’t afford the proper medical care? Are you pro nationalized health care because you believe health care is a human right?
What’s your opinion, was it a mistake? Or was it the best thing our politicians have done in years?
THE THING NOW ABOUT THIS DEBATE IS HOW FUNDAMENTALISTS IN THE POLITICAL RIGHT ARE RESPONDING. WITH SUCH AGGRESSION , FEAR AND HATRED.
I BELIEVE THAT GOD IS NOT A REBUBLICAN, OR ANY PARTY THAT PEOPLE OF FAITH BELONG TOO. BUT THE WAY WAY RIGHT HAS BEEN SO SCARED WITH THE DEMOCRATS, THE PRES. AND THE HOUSE, THE RETORIC HAS BEEN ABSOLUTELY FEAR BASED, YET THEY ARE THE ONES WHO CLAIM TO PRAY IN THE RIGHT PEOPLE INTO ELECTED OFFICE. FAIR AND BALANCED WHAT IS THAT? SHOULD HEALTH CARE BE MOTIVATED BY PROFIT. CORPORATIONS? WHICH IS THE GREATER EVIL, GOVT. OR PROFIT BASED SERVICES? JUST LOOK AT THE BANK & MORTGAGE CRISIS. SHOULD PROFIT BASED LOBBIYSTS OR THE COMMON PEOPLE BE IN AUTHORITY? A BALANCE IS NEEDED, I DO NOT AGREE WITH
THE EXTREME OPINION, OR THE VIOLENCE THAT GOES WITH IT. AND HOW MUCH IS THE RECENT WARS COSTING US? THE WAY RIGHT IS ON BOARD WITH THAT DUE TO FEAR AGAIN, WMD’S??
I definitely agree that the aggression and hatred is wrong and wholly uncalled for. But just because that response is wrong does that mean that the bill is right? I don’t know, regardless of one’s beliefs about more or less government involvement, just looking at this from an economical point of view I think we need to acknowledge the dangerous waters we’re entering. A country already in debt and in deep economic crisis passed a bill that doesn’t have the finances to keep it afloat in the years to come. Once it’s in place, it will be near impossible to retract. So somehow we’re going to have to pay for it. If the income tax that comes out of our paychecks now feels like too much, what is it going to feel like when those taxes double or even triple to be able to maintain government-funded healthcare?
